In 2010, I was among the group of founding members of 091Labs, a hackerspace in Galway City. I was invited to organise a temporary hacker space by the director of the Mindfield Festival of Ideas, Naoise Nunn. The outdoor festival was held in Merrion Square, Dublin, and the programme ran over the weekend from Fri April 29th to Sun May 1st, 2011.
The Mindfield Hacker Space was a first gathering of hackers from the many self-organised hacker spaces that were emerging in towns and cities across Ireland at that time. As such, the programme was very much a collaborative effort with workshops and activities organised by members of TOG (Dublin), Nexus (Cork), 091Labs (Galway), MilkLabs (Limerick).
The featured image at the top of this page is from one of the panel discussions ‘Hack The Planet: Hackerspaces – Centres of Creativity and Innovation’, held at the Ignition Stage of the Mindfield Festival on Sat, April 30th, 2011. Participants from the left are Dr. Gabriela Avram (MILKLabs, Limerick), Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh (sugru.com), Adrian Avendano (091Labs.com, Galway), Jeffrey Roe (TOG.ie, Dublin), myself: Kevin Flanagan (091Labs.com, Galway), Rob Fitzsimons (TOG.ie, Dublin), and Cathal Garvey (Nexus Cork).
